Fault2SHA Learning Series – Betics Faults by Maria Ortuño

June 19 @ 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

The Eastern Betics as a main source of damaging earthquakes within the Western Mediterranean

María Ortuño

Professor, Risknat- research group
Department of Earth and Ocean Dynamics of the University of Barcelona

Monday 19th June 2023 15:00 CEST (14:00 UK, 15:00 Spain/Italy/France, 13:00 UTM)

The Eastern Betics are part of the Betic-Rif Orogen, which extend from Northeastern Africa to Southern Iberia, surrounding the Alboran Sea. Some of the most damaging earthquakes in the Western Mediterranean are  the product of the activity of faults located within this region. In this lecture, we will give some basic tips to understand the formation and evolution of this part of the Mediterranean, which has been the object of intense debate and scientific controversy. We also will visit the main seismogenic faults studied in the last decades under the perspective of the seismic hazard they pose, and will comment the challenges that the Fault2SHA-Eastern Betics group is dealing with, especially when having to select the most feasible rupturing models and appropriate paleoseismic parameters.
