Physics-based earthquake modeling and seismic hazard assessment
Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, LMU Munich
Monday 20th September 2021 14:00 CEST (13:00 UK, 14:00 Italy/France)
Seismology has a long tradition of using and advancing computational methods to study earthquake processes and their impacts, the multiple scales of seismic wave propagation and to image Earth’s interior. The abundance of high-quality data contained in the waveforms of continuous seismic and geodetic recordings along with the growth of high-performance computing (HPC) capabilities is transforming our view of the Earth. I will review recent advances in physics-based earthquake and deterministic ground motion modeling using open-source software and modern computing infrastructure toward making physics-based interpretations an important part of seismic hazard assessment.
