The Dead Sea Fault: A major plate boundary in Eastern Mediterranean

Yann Klinger

Head of Tectonics Lab, IPGP (Institut de Physique du Globe)

Monday 13th March 2023 14:00 CET (13:00 UK, 14:00 Italy/France)

The Dead Sea fault is a major plate boundary, bounding the Arabic plate to the west. The fault is about 1200km long, extending from the Red Sea spreading center to the East Anatolian Fault in the north. Although this fault has been very quiet during the last centuries, the results accumulated at different time and spatial scales during the last decades emphasize that this structure is a major active fault that should not be overlooked. In the present talk I will present an overview of the different aspects of the seismo-tectonics of the Dead Sea fault. In the light of the 2023 devastating earthquake sequence in South West Turkey, paying special attention and being ready for major earthquakes along the Dead Sea fault seems especially relevant.
